Tid bits...

I have been loving all the little signs of Spring that have been popping up around me! The smell as the ground starts to unthaw. The birds singing their morning songs. Even how the snow is wetter and melts quicker after each storm. Spring is just so wonderful after the long, dark cold days of winter. :)

One sad bit of spring news, is that a skunk has come out of hibernation and moved into the neighborhood. It seems to come and go, you can definitely tell by the strong odor, when it is nearby! This morning it has burrowed under our front step! There are little foot prints in the snow and dirt and rocks have been moved out of the way to make a nice little entrance.  I called the city, and they told me that they consider skunks to be a "pest" and that we should contact a pest control company to get rid of it, which will cost us $150-$200! Hopefully, they can catch it quickly though, since spring is when female skunks start preparing for babies, and I would really rather not have a skunk family living under my porch!

I am planning on starting some seeds indoors this year  I was thinking I should probably start in the next week or so. This will be a first for me and I am a little bit excited! :) I just have to decide what I am going to plant. I definitely want to try growing some herbs, but would also like to try some flowers and maybe a few veggies? I don't have a huge garden, just some front flower beds and a few planters.

Do any of you gardeners have any suggestions on which plants I should try?

I hope spring is finding you where ever you are. :)

  1. ahhh ... spring!

i'm no real garden pro, but i do love me some plants! peonies, peonies, peonies would be nice. did i mention peonies?! my kale plants took off last year (if you eat kale). i remember your mom had some nice iris plants in her front yard ... those and tulips would be nice (though, i guess they are bulbs and needed to be planted in fall).

let me know what you end up growing ... hopefully i'll have some to exchange with you!

  2. Oooohhh! Good idea! I love peonies! I will have to try planting some this year. I so wish I had been on the ball last fall and planted some tulips because they are one of my favourite flowers. :) Thanks for all the suggestions! Are you going to start any seeds this year? Or will you be too busy with the move?
